Key Highlights

  • Canadians are more likely to see a divide between the two populations: 51% believe Canadians and Americans are not similar, while 44% believe they are. Americans see more common ground, with 69% believing the two populations are similar.
  • Canadians hold a mixed view of the United States: 34% do not admire the U.S. at all, while 29% somewhat admire it and 26% admire it “a little.”
  • Canadians are much more likely to give their own country the edge on personal and cultural traits: 64% believe Canadians are generally nicer than Americans, and 54% believe Canadians are generally more cultured.
  • Arrogance stands out as one of the strongest perceived differences: 66% of Canadians believe Americans are generally more arrogant than Canadians.
  • The relationship is most often seen as one between neighbours, chosen by 56% of Canadians and 54% of Americans. However, Americans are more likely than Canadians to describe the two countries as close friends.
Canadians view themselves as more internationally popular and nicer people than Americans according to a new Postmedia-Leger poll.

The survey, released ahead of the United States’ 250th Independence Day celebrations, found 64% of Canadians believe Canadians are nicer than Americans, while 54% said Canadians are more cultured.

The poll also found 66% of Canadians associate Americans with arrogance, compared with just 9% of American respondents who described Canadians the same way.

According to the Postmedia-Leger survey, 82% of Canadians believe Canada is more admired around the world than the United States, while more than one-third said they do not admire the U.S. at all.
The survey found perceptions were generally less negative among Americans.

While Canadians expressed stronger opinions about the United States, relatively few Americans held unfavourable views of Canada.

The poll also examined perceptions of economic opportunity.

Thirty-seven per cent of Canadians said Canada offers better opportunities for people willing to work hard, while 22% favoured the United States and 32% said the two countries offer similar opportunities.

Among Americans, 33% said the United States provides greater opportunity, compared with 16% who chose Canada, while 31% said there was little difference between the two countries.

The findings come as Canada and the United States continue trade negotiations following Washington’s decision not to renew the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement in its current form during this year’s mandatory review.

The poll was conducted by Leger for Postmedia among respondents in both Canada and the United States.
Always amusing to read about the perceptions of my fellow Canadians.

Every stereotype of the French being a bunch of backstabbing, snooty, judgemental assholes applies to Canadians in my experience. The French I've met were actually very nice.

Canadians are hypocrites when it comes to bashing USA and many I know that have that smug attitude just love cross border shopping.

Living somewhat near the border I have been to US many times and never had an issue with anyone, people are friendly and helpful.

In Canada most friendly people live I find outside of big cities.

I like shopping down there (when dollar is higher of course) as they sell stuff we do not have and no longer sell as some US companies refuse to put frog on packaging...

Plus I liked buying beer at the gas station or 7 11 lol...

Canadians are also so smug about our 'free' healthcare. Yes it can be expensive in the USA but they have way more opportunities, especially now too where Canada has been at the bottom of g7 and I think g20 countries to. The libs always fuck things up. Some people think libs may be done once boomers die off but those boomers are being replaced by many liberal voting third world...

Canadians are not nicer than Americans. Actual Americans aka the Anglo-Saxons (British) and early Irish immigrants (also, Anglo-Saxons) are way nicer than Canadians. They're honest, upfront, personable and include people. They aren't superficial either.

Canadians by comparison are "fake-nice" similar to the Japanese where they are polite but they won't breach the surface with getting to know you. It's all superficial. Canadians in general are extremely judgemental, especially the lowest and highest classes. There's a little more give directly in the middle but Americans are actually much less judgemental than Canadians.

The idea that Canadians are better regarded on the international level than Americans is only because of the American blacks. Countries hate Ns (can I use nigger here?) and Americans get lumped into the same category but again, actual Americans are not regarded the same as the negros. Canada, as it becomes more Indian, is going to be hated on an international level. True Americans are one of the most revered traveler these days because Americans are the only people with money anymore.

Are Indigenous Irish Anglo-Saxon? (Except the British colony in the Northeast) Info says they are mainly descendants of pre-Arabic middle easterners from the Stone Age.

I thought Anglo-Saxon was this post Roman admixture from north Germany and Indigenous Brit hunter gatherer. Frankish people called saxons also arrived in Romania/Transylvania

Some of the best hard working Canadians arrived from Germany in the early 2000’s imo
