Except this doesn't explain why Israel annexed parts of Syria and now wants Lebanon. IMO, the main goal is Greater Israel and promoting Israel's foreign policy ambitions while oil is a secondary factor. One thing that kinda puts a hole in the "oil is primary motivation" factor is the USA has significantly empowered Russia's O&G industry from this and essentially made Europe reliant on Russian O&G. Russia is one of the few countries with China being the only other one that could challenge USA's petrodollar dominance so that seems to throw a bit of a wrench into the theory. IMO, just like with Iraq and Afghanistan, oil was never the primary motive, it was always a secondary. Israel's ambitions are the primary motive but Israel would use the prospects of O&G to convince people (sweeten the pot) who wouldn't necessarily push Israeli ambitions for the sake of Israeli ambitions alone.
