The State of Canada

Am interesting read and nothing new to the folks who hang around here. I do take exception with the statement that Canada doesn't refine it own oil, that we ship raw crude to the US and they refine it and ship it back to us. That is an outright lie. Saskatchewan has the Coop refinery in Regina that sells refined fuel to a couple of northern states. There is also the heavy oil upgrader in Lloydminster, not to mention Irving in the east. Whether deliberate, or not, it's provably false statements like this that severely harms the credibility of the article and the author.

About 25% of gasoline consumed in Canada is refined in the USA.

It's actually less of an issue than the fact we don't export the finished good but we export the raw material. We should be exporting the finished good to countries overseas instead of shipping it to the USA for the USA to refine it and ship it overseas or sell it to themselves.

Canada should not exist. It's a historical artifact created by the British need to withdraw from the continent. And when they went, the guiding rationale for a buffer independent of the states did as well. Our dysfunctional policy loop was driven by the fact that we're a fake country, disconnected from strategic realities, with choices that until recently have never even mattered. This was all propped up by American permissiveness when they decided to stop with the early plan of annexation. Now that they are non-permissive, and the country is about to be ruled by a population which is not Canadian, the reasons for ending the federation should be clear. The only constant in provincial history across all of Canada is that nearly every province has been distisfied by confederation and wanted at some point to leave. This is quite natural, as east-west trade and economic integration in Canada is minimal but North-South integration is terrific. I don't expect boomers to wake up to any of this sadly.

Much like the Soviet Elites gave up on their belief in communism thus it stops existing. You can argue same for the Elites in Canada and United States(although there seems to divide in Republicans). It going to come to point where their is going re-ordering of various nation states similar during the American Revolution and the Loyalists to the Crown. I do not think there is going to be one-giant North American Nation State as there is to many competing ethnic/racial interests in both Nations at this point.

I think the Canadian elite is too inbred, middling and indoctrinated to actually realize their political and social project has failed. They don't even know what the real problems driving dissatisfaction are, that's how thick the bubble is.

And to your last point, you are entirely right. America cannot absorb the Canadian problem entirely and not end up a failed system exactly like it. In the inevitable partition of North America, both Greater Vancouver and Toronto, and Ottawa will have to remain a part of Canada. The only tenable zones for American reunion are the prairie provinces and possibly conservative voting regions of peripheral in BC and Ontario if provincial sovereignty is ignored. Quebec would have to be cut loose, and the Maritimes will have to sit out on the sidelines.

But the overall goal of shearing off the untenable aspects of former Canada and isolating them into a hell of their own making would be achieved. We're never going to get a force for renewal within the Canadian system, it's too controlled by the mediocre and the multiracial problem is too vexing for real solutions.
