The Canadian economy shed almost 25,000 jobs in January as the ailing manufacturing sector and Ontario sustained big losses to start the year.
Despite the hit, the unemployment rate fell to 6.5 per cent in January – the lowest level in 16 months – because fewer people were active participants in the labour market, Statistics Canada said Friday in a report. Economists were expecting the jobless rate to hold steady at 6.8 per cent.
Implementing more AI to shed even more jobs.

Numbers are way worse as those are to make Liberals not as bad as they are.

Some thoughts on these numbers being as they are could be made by the fact they are deporting mmgrants and Canadians have yet to snap up some of those jobs. This is a factor but how big a factor is unknown

We all know numbers are fake and gay and these are far from accurate

If it’s government workers, I’m okay with this. Is there any breakdown available so we know what types of jobs were lost?

AI does the work. damn also 70,000 part time jobs so that means those people have no jobs now. So at least near 100,000 out of work now.

Canada Job Losses & Sector Breakdown (2026 – What We Know)
Overall Labour Market (Jan 2026)

Statistics Canada reported:

Total employment fell by ~25,000 jobs in January 2026 vs December.

Part-time jobs dropped sharply (~70,000) while full-time work actually rose.

This means the headline loss reflects weakness in less-secure, part-time work more than across-the-board layoffs.

Industries Where Losses Have Been Concentrated

Based on sector-level data for early 2026:

Manufacturing

Manufacturing employment fell by ~28,000 jobs and remains down notable from a year ago.
This sector is sensitive to trade and global supply slowdowns.

️ Public Administration

The federal government has started job-cut notices affecting thousands of public service roles as part of budget cuts.

A separate union report notes that 1,700+ public service staff received layoff notices recently.

Media & Journalism

Bell Media announced layoffs impacting 20 media jobs across journalism and coordination roles.
This is a small count but reflects broader media sector pressures.

Jobs Where Growth or Stability Is Still Seen

Despite overall job losses, some areas are adding employment:

Information, culture and recreation services

Business services

Agriculture

Utilities

(Rise in these categories was seen alongside the job losses in January 2026)

Broader Context for 2026
Slower labour market growth expected

Economists forecast that Canada’s job creation will slow sharply in 2026 and 2027 compared to recent years.

Layoff rate trend

Data through late 2025 showed layoff rates below pre-pandemic norms, though hiring rates were also slower.

What This Means (Summary)
Category Current Trend in 2026
Manufacturing jobs Decreasing (largest job losses reported)
Public sector jobs Cuts planned/well underway
Part-time positions Many losses
Full-time work Some gains
Service sectors (business, agriculture) Adding jobs
Limitations

Canada’s official labour statistics by job type for all of 2026 aren’t fully reported yet — monthly data are still coming out from Statistics Canada.

Some layoffs (like in tech companies with global staffing decisions) may not be Canada-specific but still affect Canadian divisions.
