Ford cancels Electric F150

Absolutely nobody could have saw this coming.(sarcasm)

When I was 10 years old I owned a battery operated RC truck. It was fun to play with. It took about 20 minutes to charge and could drive for about 1 hour.

30 years later, the technology hasn't improved much.

Ford didn't make the EV F-150 much better. I hate that they call them "Electric Vehicles", they are battery powered, the same as my RC truck was. It's battery capacity is terrible, especially when hauling or in the winter.

@Beers2Freedom you must be a youngin'. :)

My brother had a battery RC car in the late 80s, hours of charging for 10 minutes drive time. Ni-Cad batteries. Better than disposable alkalines, but hoo boy they were not fun to live with.

Early Ni-Cad power tools were doggy as well. Weak, slow charging, short life. That's about the time I decided to stop being an early adopter, and to stay away from battery operated bullshit. Hundreds of 90's dollars (ie substantial) for an inferior product.

Your overall point is correct - battery stuff is "better" but the tech has not progressed to the point that it's viable. I think I read that the Lightning's battery pack contains the same amount of energy as a gallon or 2 of diesel fuel... so imagine a pickup truck with a 2 gallon fuel tank. Useless as tits on a boar.

That's what I've always said, EVs are great, their batteries SUCK! The only way EVs will become viable is for battery technology to become equal to or better than gas for energy storage. Oh and if you ask why I say EVs are great it's because they are, trains, subways, streetcars, trolley busses these are all very good at their jobs because they don't need batteries, but once the EV gets away from it's wires it's screwed with the batteries we have now.

If Canada has an EV mandate in 2030, will there be any vehicles to buy?
FreedomTruthI understand the car makers in the USA are working to release some very energy efficient new diesel models very soon!

It seems he's going to bring Kei cars, which if you're in the city could be pretty neat, don't know how you country boys would take to them but it's a good idea, we should do the same here.

@d01tg0d0wn

I've seen one or two like this in Calgary before.

Here’s a breakdown of what a Suzuki Carry mini truck might cost if you’re in Canada and want to buy one and import it yourself (or compare that to buying one already here):

1) Buying the Truck in Japan (Used Price)

You can find used Suzuki Carry trucks in Japan for relatively cheap before shipping/import:

  • Older used Suzuki Carry (1990s–2000s) often list for ~US $1,800 – $3,800 (~CAD 2,400–5,200). (Car From Japan)
  • Even some newer, better condition ones show up around US $3,500–$6,500 (~CAD 4,800–8,900) before export. (BE FORWARD: Japanese Used Cars for Sale)
(These are auction/export prices — you’d still need to ship and clear customs.)

2) Cost to Import to Canada

Importing adds several extra costs — shipping, duty/taxes, and fees:

Estimated Total Import Cost

  • Doing everything yourself: ~CAD 9,100 total (truck + shipping + import fees). (Platform Garage)
  • Using a full-service importer/broker: ~CAD 12,200+ total. (Platform Garage)
This includes:

  • Purchase & export from Japan
  • Marine shipping (RoRo)
  • Customs clearance and duty
  • Excise & terminal fees
  • Tow from port and required parts/services
(Example breakdown from a recent import cost guide.) (Platform Garage)
Other sources note general vehicle import costs (brokerage, GST, tow/unloading, etc.) add up too. (Japan Car Direct)

Plus local provincial safety & inspection fees after arrival. (kmcjapan.co.jp)

3) Buying One Already in Canada

Importers and dealers in Canada (e.g., Manga Auto Import, Vancouver dealers):

  • Suzuki Carry already imported & ready to drive: ~CAD 11,000 – $15,000+ depending on mileage and condition. (mangaautoimport.com)
  • Local classifieds/communities report trucks around ~CAD 13,000 are common. (Reddit)

Rough Price Comparison

Purchase MethodTypical Price (CAD)
Buy in Japan + DIY Import~9,000 – 10,000*
Buy in Japan + Full Service Import~12,000+
Buy Already Imported in Canada~11,000 – 15,000+
*Note: Exact total depends on auction price, shipping port, broker fees, exchange rate, provincial tax, and inspection costs.

Tips

✅ Vehicles must be ≥15 years old to import into Canada (except Quebec may require 25 years). (Minitrucks)
✅ Importing yourself can save money versus dealer pricing, but requires paperwork and coordination.
✅ Dealers/Importers often include registration and safety inspection in the price.

If you tell me where in Canada you’re located (province), I can estimate local taxes and inspection costs too!

@TOPDAWG all cars seem over priced. Have you seen the price of used cars? Also price of new cars especially mid sized suv or something that can seat more then 5.

I was looking for a newer car and couldn't believe that a 2024 vehicle with 80 000 plus kilometers was nearly the same price as a brand new vehicle. Then you look at the finance rate of it and its min 8% if you have good credit and not just good credit scores but exceptional credit scores or the finance rate is even higher. New vehicles finance rates are 4.99% if your lucky.

Truck prices are astronomical as well and the parts are shit. Transfer cases are plastic and oil pans as well and then their is the useless computers and endless screens in them. I have no idea what it would cost to replace those screens and without them the vehicle is toast as you cant control fans or drive modes nothing

Something has to change because this is crazy

Eventually i will need a new vehicle however so i will have to figure this out but things are not looking good out there for car buyers

Also as a fellow who is 6,1 those Japanese cars dont fit a fellow like me. My oldest son is 6,4 and going on 6,5 so they dont work for him neither

@d01tg0d0wn the used car market right now is completely fucked. People are not selling their cars in during covid plus everyone is now broke so driving thier cars into the ground. I used car is not much cheaper than a brand new car depending on what you get.

Is anyone going to tell VW? They're still building a "giga factory" in St Thomas, Ontario to make EV batteries for cars that no one wants. Production doesn't start until 2027.

Germany is gonna fight the Russians though. Surely this isnt a sign that their economy is turning to dog poop. How do you fight Russians with no money?

Have u seen how cheap those cars are? In Poland a fellow tested some and then found he could rip the whole steering column out without much effort by over steering or correction in an emergency situation
