Discussion Old Folks

All the time. My Dad just passed away (RIP), so at his funeral I saw all my remaining Uncles and Aunts (I have a lot).

They are almost all retired Southern Ontario farmers, and are generally Conservative, but even they were saying Trump this or Trump that. It is pretty easy to tell who forms all of their current event opinions on the local media. I tend to just avoid interacting with most of my family now, except for the few that I know are based.

It was funny for me to hear that my sister (very Liberal) just broke up with her Jewish boyfriend because the boyfriend was becoming more and more antagonistic, being pro-Trump, and going on about Liberals this, and Democrats that, and so on... I wonder, can we keep him and send her packing? They lived together... that must have been some tense times the last few months!

Tough to loose your dad. Maybe there’s space to reconnect with a few relatives? They may be towing the expected line in group setting, I think many oldies do that.

Spoke to the mother in law on the phone today, she told me 'Trump is a tyrant' a couple of times.

Not even sure why, I wasn't even talking about him.

My takeaway is that few people have 'formed' opinions (conclusions made based on observation and thought). Instead they have 'received' opinions (oh this article looks polished and professional, therefore it must be true)

I happen to think that Trump is compromised. Covering for pedophiles and child traffickers is basically a deal breaker for me, and I wouldn't even be surprised if poor Charlie was executed so that people forget about Epstein and Trump's image as the 'defender of America' is repaired. People are really like lemmings, they have 10 second memories.

Did you notice the exposure of the bioweapon and covid vaxx got swept over real fast. Big pharma is losing the PR campaign and getting exposed big time

Expect more of this as the covid hoax continues to get exposed

Kirk died for many agendas this was one but i dont see many talking about it

Yep, mostly one of my boomer aunts. She always had to bring up Ron DeSantis for some reason, he’s not even the president. If she starts talking about Charlie Kirk at Thanksgiving or something, I’m gonna be pissed.

My mother was like that until she learned to used youtube. Now she's all pro trump

I hold out hope that some of my family will discover Youtube…

Yes, I recall your people were all complete covidiots.

I didn’t do more than a surface reconnect with my fam post covid as they are all down south. My boomer mother has TDS and is also in a high control ideology, so she doesn’t visit me up here and we speak 2 or 3 times a year. Too expensive to go down and visit her and my siblings this year.

I was surprised to learn that my Boomer mother was a big fan of Charlie Kirk (she watches a lot of TV, so she must have seen him on Fox), plus another guy I know in his mid-60s told me he regularly watched Kirk's clips on Youtube. So maybe entry-level conservatism is bigger than you'd imagine among the oldies -- it's a start, anyway

Wife's uncle has TDS. He visited us earlier this year and would always bring up Trump even when we weren't talking about him or politics. He straight up said that he would have voted for the CPC had Carney not stepped in because he thought he would be able to deal with Trump.

We would laugh about it and brush it off, because other than that he's a good guy to be honest.

That's why we're still being run by the Liberals.

@DisobeyTyranny

Irregularities “Unacceptable”

Chief Electoral Officer Stéphane Perrault yesterday acknowledged “unacceptable” irregularities in the April 28 vote including misplaced ballots, website crashes and random poll closures. Public complaints were up 64 percent compared to the 2021 general election, from 9,410 to 15,400: "We saw things we hadn’t seen before, errors that we hadn’t seen before." READ MORE

Yes my parents and most of my family have TDS, I gave up trying to argue. They won't listen to me because I am younger, they automatically think my opinion is less. Even though I tried to be as reasonable and non-combative as possible. They would instantly shout down anything I said when I challenged them. all they do is repeat whatever the TV says.
It's crazy how quickly they went from Anti-Liberal to Pro-Liberal, the media brainwashing is exactly that, brainwashing. They spent years complaining about Trudeau and then instantly flip and support the exact same party again with Carney, because the TV told them to.

It's especially dumb because my parents are actually US Citizens (they were born in USA) and my mom complains about house prices in Canada because she wants to move. I told her she can sell her house and move across the border (we live very close to the border so it wouldn't even be a far drive to visit family) and she could buy a bigger house there for cheap.
But they say the most dumb stuff like "I'm not moving there Americans all have guns and I'll get shot" or "Move there when Trump is president hell no!"

As if a small town in upstate New York is some dangerous place to live, lol.

So you could move down easy as an American yourself.

I find it’s not limited to “old people”. Plenty of young folks with nothing to do but watch tv and internet all day.

Yep. Although it's true that Boomer ignorance is very characteristic of a generation raised on network TV news, younger people's ignorance is far more culpable given that they have grown up surrounded by alternate sources of information ready at hand -- every young leftie is carrying a device in his pocket that could teach him the truth about the world in just 15 minutes if only he'd be willing to listen

My parents watch CNN, their takes have gotten insufferable since 2016.
They dont seem to understand that people who want you to vote for their side will demonize the other side.
They seem to believe the CNN tagline which has not been true for a very long time "most trusted source in news"

My dad just said "how can non-whites vote for this guy, hell what kind of white.... well i guress that guy who got shot was the kind of guy, because he was hateful"

But it is because i know that older people had little forms of world knowlage that had not been given to them by mainstream media. Its what they know, and they think news orgs are still nessisary and trustworthy. Hasnt been the case since they were young though, and they dont know any better.

Their knowalge of the worlds is filterted through mainsteam media's lens and they are to the point where they can be shown contradictory proof (such as "KIRK SAID EMPATHY BAD", but then you show them he actually said "I dont like empathy as a concept, sympathy is what i prefer") they will still argue in the way CNN origally framed everything, because at that point CNN had already solidified their version in their minds.... and old people dont like changing their mind after.

Look at the shooter, framed as republican origally, but turns out he is a more recent convert to liberalisim.... so what do my parents think about this? Lets reinact it.

conservative shooter: "Oh, see they are so hateful"
turns out to be left: "Doesnt matter what he was"

Anyone else deal with parents or older folk that just watch the news and have no clue? Orange man bad. Cut up the USA with arrogance like we're so much better? Just curious if anyone else has to listen to their bullshit?
Canada EhSame people who took the vax.

It is sort of heartbreaking to watch decent people turn bad because of what they watch on TV. One of my in-laws has such severe TDS that they claimed it was a shame he didn’t get killed when he was shot.

The boomers grew up in a time where trust in the media was simply not questioned. That blind trust continues today with the cable news networks even when they are pushing the most obvious lies. It is even worse when they get their news from Apple News. They are mainlining propaganda directly into their eyeballs 24/7 that the believe to be 100% true.

My father who is a lifetime conservative voter told me a few weeks ago that he believes Trump won’t leave office after his term is over and that he will use the military to keep himself in office. I used the inverse “that sounds like a pretty wild conspiracy theory, where did you hear that?” trick on my father and he freaked out and said CNN.

My father in law is not technical at all. His work gave him an iPhone and now the only notifications he gets are phone calls, texts, and Apple News updates. He wakes up in the middle of the night any time his phone alerts him to new news articles, reads them, gets pissed off about Trump, then can’t sleep for the rest of the night.

My father in law is how I know how effective the propaganda machine can be. He is a rural blue collar guy, owns a lot of guns which he says he will die defending if there is a gun grab, doesn’t like trannies, hates Trudeau etc. But somehow also hates Alberta, Danielle Smith, the USA, Trump, Charlie Kirk, basically anyone who is trying to defend his lifestyle that the media demonizes. I’ve watched it happen in real time over the past 15 years. 2016 was wild.

"My father who is a lifetime conservative voter told me a few weeks ago that he believes Trump won’t leave office after his term is over and that he will use the military to keep himself in office"

I remember lefties twenty years ago swearing up and down that George W. Bush was going to do exactly this as well. For you young'uns, Dubya Derangement Syndrome was an exact parallel of the present-day Trump variety.

Actually, I'm old enough to remember lefties having all kinds of crazy paranoid fantasies about Reagan as well, especially that he was going to deliberately start a nuclear war in order to bring about the Second Coming of Christ -- but in his memoirs Reagan stated that if the Soviet Union had launched a nuclear first strike during his administration he would have chosen not to retaliate, in order to spare millions of lives

Thanks for the responses everyone. I have to deal with parents that are out to lunch. No fucking clue but cnn. Make shit up in their own heads. Sometimes I think it's dementia honestly. Cheers all

It's very, very hard for older people to make any kind of changes to their thinking however trivial, and even more so when it would involve their having to admit that they were mistaken about something incredibly important for decades and even based their entire identity around that mistake. In my opinion brainwashed Boomers are a totally lost cause, but as it happens they're all going to be dead in the next 10-15 years anyway; the younger generations are still salvageable from brainwashing because their daily experience is having to stay afloat in the wreckage of a declining civilization

My mom is CBC approved and my dad also just goes along with what everyone around him thinks because he just wants to grill, enjoy retirement and pretend there is no rot.

Most boomers are on another planet, in retirement mode, drinking cbc and ctv kool aid. My sibling and many of my friends and family have never been laid off and have only benefited from the globohomo system, they have secure jobs and made advancements so they too just drink the kool aid or downplay the issues. Things will have to get a lot worse for them before they begin to come around.

I'm actually looking forward to the inevitable economic collapse because im not mired in debt.

"he just wants to grill, enjoy retirement and pretend there is no rot"

I'm a Gen-Xer rather than a Boomer, but I can tell you from personal experience that your overall mental and physical energy levels drop a lot after you turn 50. I don't agree with oldies lying to themselves and others around them about the perilous state of our civilization, but their avoidance of the subject is based on the fact that they couldn't do anything about it even if they wanted to -- it's much easier for them to "whistle past the graveyard" and pretend that everything is fine because they know that they'll be dead soon anyway
