When confronted about the positions, a CBC spokesperson told True North that they were “unaware” of the issue but would provide a “more informed answer” in the future.
Despite receiving $1.4 billion in annual taxpayer funds, the CBC has hired at least 20 temporary foreign workers in its Ontario offices over the last decade.
The state-funded broadcaster used Labour Market Impact Assessments to claim it was unable to acquire Canadian workers for “high wage” positions.
Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program has resulted in widespread unemployment, particularly among the country’s youth.
According to federal documents, the CBC has used the program to hire people for positions such as broadcasters, announcers, technicians, web designers and developers.
Other temporary foreign workers were employed as computer programmers, network technicians, research marketers, business managers and consultants.
News of their hiring practices comes on the heels of a new lawsuit against the CBC for refusing to disclose its Gem subscription numbers, the broadcaster’s streaming service.
The CBC receives billions in taxpayer money annually, yet it charges Canadians a premium to watch its programming. A CBC Gem Premium subscription costs $5.99 per month (plus applicable taxes) for an ad-free experience.
