Voters in the city of Camrose, the largest jurisdiction in the sprawling rural riding of Battle River-Crowfoot, went to the polls Monday in a by-election that Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre needs to win to restore his seat in Parliament.

Polls opened at 8:30 a.m. local time, and many people came out to cast their votes in a race they say is crucial.

Michael Gacusan, a 17-year resident of Camrose, arrived at a voting station with his wife and daughter, showing support for Poilievre.

“He’s a good leader, honestly,” said Gacusan.

“Very important for all of us, of course. Like I said, we need some changes in our province,” he added.

Poilievre is expected to win in the central Alberta riding, which has been deemed “safe” due to its traditionally conservative roots. Former MP Damien Kurek, who won the riding in the general election with 83 per cent of the vote, stepped aside so his party leader could run and restore his seat in the House of Commons after losing his Ottawa-area seat in April, which he had held for 20 years.

Voters CTV News spoke to believe Poilievre will win. Those in favour of him are excited, while those who aren’t say they are frustrated.

“He’s not going to care what’s going on in the constituency,” said Louie Hagel.

“He’s more concerned about his own rear end being in Parliament down in Ottawa.”

Glen Miller described Poilievre as “parachuting into this riding.”

“He’s going to win. It’s kind of frustrating for me, not being a Conservative,” he said.

Voters say what they will be paying attention to is the margin by which Poilievre wins.

“If he does well here, he will probably keep it (the seat),” said Glenda Hagel.

“But if he doesn’t do as well, because it’s such a strong Conservative base here, then they might be looking at a leadership review.”

That leadership review by Conservative Party members is slated for January.

“I’m very positive he’s not going to pull in the 82 per cent or 83 per cent of the popular vote,” said Louie.

“He’s going to be lacking some support because the anticipation is that he’s not going to be here full time like Damien was.”

Poilievre is one of 214 candidates on the record-breaking ballot. The majority are affiliated with the “Longest Ballot Committee,” advocating for a review of Canada’s first-past-the-post electoral system, which they say doesn’t adequately represent the vote. The group also ran a campaign in Poilievre’s former Ottawa riding where he lost.

Because of the large number of people on the ballot, for the first time ever, Elections Canada will have a write-in ballot, meaning voters will write out the name of their preferred candidate.

Elections Canada will start counting ballots from advance polls early in the day to ensure results are available as quickly as possible.

@Nink

I don't see it being positive - the ONLY reason PP is there at all is because of the demographics.

The guy doesn't give a shit about representing his constituents - if there was a riding with more winnable demographics elsewhere, then he wouldn't even be there. The bad news is the Libs will be sure to 'diversify' as many Western ridings as possible to ensure this won't be done again.

PP is simply taking advantage of a election vehicle to get back into the HoC - which is a criticism that many CPC supporters levied on Max when he ran in a by-election.

He took advantage of all those well wishing (but stupid) Canadians who still think that the CPC will somehow fix anything.

@TOPDAWG Should of had a leadership convention. I don't think Max is serious anyway. I honestly thought when they started they would of been more successful. The former Reform Party they had success after a couple or few elections. They were basically a western Party at first and Manning was a better leader than Max and I dare say a real conservative or very close to it. Yet back than we did not have so many third world people in Canada either....

@Nink He and Danielle have to appear to be on the same page or he has no legitimacy, and losing the first time severely impaired his legitimacy in the first place. I think he has to move towards Danielle.

@ayn_rands_ghost I was full PPC when they started but really it just seems a money scam for max at this point. at this point I'm sick of the doom BS Canada just has to get worse then what? If it gets worse you're going to have to live with it cause cdns are not rising up.

The CPC might slow the bleed. Sorry, but this whole idea that “it has to get worse” is fucking retarded. If it gets worse, then what? People just learn to live with it, because that’s all anyone’s going to do. Alberta will never vote to leave Canada—at the rate things are going, you could get the most hardcore right-wing leader you want and it’ll still be too late.

So I’ll settle for at least slowing the bleed a bit. We can push more so called right after that.

I seriously wonder if we will ever see another 'conservative' government in Canada. He probably would of won last one if Trudeau stayed on but it was soft support as soon as libs changed leaders many of the son soft support went back to libs. Plus the rapid, massive, insane demographic change it is going to be tough.

Who is there anyway to replace Milhouse? Randy or Cheesecake may run and maybe winebox Rempel? barf. I do not see anyone of quality in the shadows.

Canada has no future. Canada has no children. Look at the under-25 demographics. Canadians are a minority.

Imagine being a young Canadian (a real one, not a magic dirt one) born in say, 2020.

They will be told that their white skin makes them evil and that repentance is impossible.

They will be told that to fit in, you have accept those that hate you.

They will tell them to get on the train.

Mark my words, there are children alive today that will see the inside of concentration camps.

Nah the Muslims and Indians will need someone to clean their toilets and mop their floors. Whites will fill the TFW jobs but really Canada will just fall apart. at 45 I will be dead by then so I won't see it.

Yeah, I voted for him, but Trump fucked up the last election. I have no idea how Canadians voted for the guy after Trump said he wanted him to win—they did it just to spite Trump. I mean, WTF, how does that even make sense you voted for the party trump said he wanted to win. Canadians are so fucking retarded and feel so small next to the US that they’ll vote the opposite just to spite America.

Dude hasn’t learned a damn thing. He’s talking about crime, but it’s the browns committing most of it—so yeah, let’s shove them into the background. I’ll give him credit for at least talking about doing something on foreign crime, but of course he still keeps the browns in the back. don't want this crime send them all back.
