BREAKING: Canadian unemployment surges
Fresh data shows that Canada lost over 50,000 full-time jobs in July 2025

Canada saw a massive drop in employment in July 2025, according to just-released data from Statistics Canada.
Employment declined by 41,000 jobs in July, with a drop of 51,000 in full-time work.
At the same time, Statistics Canada reported that the population increased by over 37,000 in July. In the past 12 months, Canada’s population has increased by 715,000, with 307,500 jobs added.
The national unemployment rate sits at 6.9%, with unemployment tick up in most provinces.
In Metro Toronto, Canada’s most populous region, unemployment hit 9%.
Unemployment amongst youth (15-24 years) continues to be particularly high, increasing to 14.6% - the highest level since 2010.
Unemployment, like elbows, decidedly up.Critics have questioned why Canada continues to import foreign workers for jobs that would traditionally be filled by younger Canadians. In its most recent data (Q2 2025), Statistics Canada estimates that 2,959,825 ‘non-permanent residents’ live in Canada, with 1,783,448 holding work permits.
