A sign of the times: As HOCKEY enrollment drops, free CRICKET clinics emerge

Big frenly fren. Much wow!
I wonder why it's only available to easily impressionable kids?
Also, I never see hockey in the park's lacrosse boxes anymore, like I have since the beginning of time. It's only all cricket, all the time.
Does your area in Canada have this, too, or is it just Surrey?

Just a guess here but, maybe hockey enrollments are down because of the high cost and time commitments. I'm glad I talked my youngest out of it.

There was a sizeable high school in my area which recently discontinued its hockey team for the first time in its history. But I get the sense that the real sports-related casualty of multiculturalism is baseball -- I see baseball diamonds in the countryside sitting in total neglect, their fences rusting away

Always worth a gamble. You never know if they'll be good and earn the big bucks. It could be your kid, it could be the guys I hung out with -- yes I have NHL guys. Just play... There's also low income stuff nobody applies for. Skates on as early as possible.

in edmonton it is dropping as fees are insane and ppl are seeking alternate private leagues because of the politicization of the sport because of Hockey Canada.

Lots of outdoor leagues are beginning to popup

It's the same with Lacrosse. The politics... sanctioned, unsanctioned, blah blah blah... the city gives league rights to the highest bidder in their parks, fights and assault charges handed out over field use.

The pakis love their cricket.

I am glad my daughter didn't play hockey and my son won't either. As much as I loved playing on the frozen ponds and street hockey after school, that was the extent I did growing up.

The cost is insane in an already insane country to live in. Add in the horrible schedule and travel costs. Replacing gear so rapidly. Have you seen the costs of sticks!

My daughter played soccer growing up and we golf together.

My son likes playing with his lacrosse sticks so we might get him to join that next year when it opens and he is old enough.

I have no interest in putting my kids in hockey, let alone teaching them how to skate. Too much money, too much time. Baseball is a vastly superior sport.

How many years until Canada has a cricket league? The smell in those stadiums must be brutal

Yeah it's probably due to the cultural change, but I think a part of it is that cricket seems to be more accessible and easy to setup. Hockey seems more expensive - with the ice rinks/maintenance and the gear, it adds up (unless you wait until winter and play with your friends on a frozen pond).
Alternatively, a kid's soccer or baseball league is more affordable for most people, in general.
