A 14-year-old boy is wanted for the stabbing death of 71-year-old Shahnaz Pestonji on Thursday, July 17.
Kymani Wint, 14, of Toronto, is being sought by police. He is described as approximately 5’7”, 135 pounds with a skinny build, wearing black pants, a black hooded sweatshirt with “New York – 555” written on the front in white lettering. He has been seen wearing a balaclava-style face covering with his hood up, and carrying a black satchel.
“I want to be very clear: do not approach this individual. He is considered dangerous,” Homicide and Missing Persons Unit Detective Matthew Pinfold told the media at 33 Division. “If you see someone matching this description, or have any information about his whereabouts, please call 9-1-1 immediately.”
Wint was last seen on the subway system at Noon at Kennedy station on Thursday, July 17.
“We are asking the public and TTC riders to stay alert and aware of their surroundings. If you see anything suspicious, report it without hesitation.”
Pestonji was putting groceries into her car in a plaza parking lot near Parkway Forest Drive and Sheppard Avenue when she was attacked and fatally stabbed at 9:30 a.m.
“We now believe this was a robbery that escalated into a deadly attack. Through reviewing video surveillance, speaking with witnesses and observing the persons movements prior to the attack, we believe that the person intended to rob Mrs. Pestonji,” Pinfold said.
He said officers have been conducting an extensive door-to-door canvas, using police dogs and drones to search for a suspect and identified Wint with the help of the community and policing partners, especially the TTC.
Judicial authorization was received to release the name and image of the suspect, as he is a young person. This authorization expires on Wednesday, July 23.
