I remember a story from the Cultural Revolution, there was a temple (I believe, this is just from dim memory) where there were ancient calligraphy scrolls with Buddhist scriptures on them. When the Red Guards were coming to "purify" the temple, the monks (or whoever was running the temple) to save the scrolls, turned them over (they were hanging on the wall) and wrote quotations from Chairman Mao o the backs of the scrolls. When the Red Guards arrived they saw the quotations on the scrolls and they didn't dare touch them. Maybe that's why Churches with fag flags on them never seem to be burnt down?
