Remember spending a couple of days there, in the old city by the Cathedral. Very lovely place but, at the same time, Cologne also has the largest brothel in Europe - literally an entire 15-storey building. Going to be fascinating and depressing to see that society self-destruct in real time.

My chief memory of Cologne is of going to a traditional German restaurant and being served by a mulatto waitress who was also a total bitch. The cathedral was magnificent, and the Roman museum was great too, but the rest of the city felt very sterile and globohomo

On some level it's impressive the breadth and depth of systematic self-hatred and self-vilification the German government propagates to native, authentic Germans. But clearly it won't end well. My hope, for the sake of that country's history and culture, is that the east - which overwhelmingly voted for the AfD - either splits off again or forms some kind of semi-autonomous polity that can act in its own self-interest. Otherwise I'm pretty sure we'll be reading about a German caliphate by the 2040s, a European Iran.

Had to put that through google translate, and I noticed that Schildkrote is turtle (tortoise) and krote is toad, so turtle is Shield Toad. Reminds me of the Aztec word for Armadillo which translates in English to Turtle Rabbit. I am a font of useless trivia.
