Or they knew from the beginning there was no real chance and the process was the punishment?

That's good news. A couple of the other guys had their mischief charges stick. They got house arrest in the end but could still go to work. They had nothing so the process was the punishment. It kind of worked too just because it cost these guys a ton in legal fees.
