Canadian households were worth more than $1.025 million on average in 2024

That’s wild. Obviously the average is always gonna be way skewed from the top few % when you’re talking about all Canadians. But even the middle 20% being over 500K is more than I would’ve thought. Crazy how much of that is tied up in real estate though, makes it pretty clear why they really don’t want home prices to tank. And if Polymarket ever opens a bet on whether Canada will tax unrealized gains on your primary residence by 2028, I’m going all in — yes. I think the way they’ll do it is they’ll start with people who own their homes outright. They’ll say you’re lucky, you’re already ahead, so this is just a “fairness” thing. And people will actually buy into it because everyone who doesn't fit that vs people with fully paid off homes, obvious who wins that one. Then it’ll be people with a certain amount of equity. Then eventually anyone with a mortgage at all. And of course the end goal is nobody really owns a home, it'll just be too painful

You mean property taxes?

Speaking of taxes on unrealized gains, looks like Australia wants to tax unrealized gains on retirement accounts. If that passes, I'd expect the libs to call for something similar here on TFSAs.

Simply put if you are under the age of like 30 there is no hope for anything but subsistence living in this country.

Too many people with luxury beliefs in Canada that refuse to allow legitimate problems to be addressed. Can't house people unless it's done in a feminist or transexual fashion. Cant feed people until the land acknowledgement. Can't put criminals in jail because it may be discriminatory.

A nation that will not or cannot house or feed its young people deserves to be burned to the ground.

pretty much anyone with a paid off house is a millionaire in this country .canada is the land of millionaires who eat kraft dinner for supper and shop at dollarama. i saw someone on twitter post that they have a 1300 a month property tax on their home in edmonton...16k a year to keep something you already own . canadians are house rich but money poor and there is literally nobody in government who is even trying to fix this . gregor robertson the housing minister seems to think that the cost of housing doesnt need to go down . bro wtf . half the country makes 45k a year .in 10 more years we will all either be living in concrete commie blocks like 1975 yugoslavia or in those tiny home complexes they have for the homeless drug addicts .there is no way your average household has an honest net worth of over a mil unless they are not counting debt. the boomers with paid off homes and double pensions might but they are not the majority of the population . at this point it seems like the jeets are the majority and they all work at subway
