Canadian boy, 11, died from rabies after waking up with bat on his mouth

Since the child had no visible bite marks and the bat’s behavior did not seem erratic, the boy’s parents did not seek medical attention.
Four days after the symptoms began, a local urgent care clinic prescribed him medication used to treat herpes, as it was presumed he had symptoms of Bell’s palsy caused by the herpes virus.

Three days later, he was brought to a city hospital emergency department in Ontario with painful swallowing and vomiting.

A physical exam found ulcers in his gums and a mild impairment in a nerve on the right side of the face that provides sensation and controls chewing.

The boy’s family told the doctors about the incident with the bat and, the next day, the emergency doctor notified the local public health authority.

However, the hospital discharged the child on a presumed diagnosis of herpes gingivostomatitis, which is sores in the lips or mouth caused by herpes.
It takes a village to kill a child.

This is why you must be a staunch pain in the ass prick and tell the medical professionals what needs to happen. With tools like ChatGPT, it's easier than ever for a parent to piece things together and tell them what to do next.

I've had it happen with myself as well. As a kid, I had pneumonia and they kept sending me home from the doctor saying it's only a virus and will clear up on its own. At some point, my Mother insisted they scan my chest and yep, it was pneumonia.

Bottom line is you must advocate for your kids and yourself. You know what is in the realm of normal sickness and what isn't. Don't take no for an answer when you're getting strung along.

Sucks for the kid. RIP.

Yeah, exactly. I don't ask doctors what I need, I tell them. Some get mad but that's fine. Some will argue and that's even better because they can share their knowledge and if they're smart they'll tell me why I'm wrong which may help me. Some are order takers which is what doctors ought to be. All doctors are, are simply government approved gatekeepers to drugs or procedures the government makes illegal unless you jump through the hoops. Surgeons are needed for their skills but soon, they'll be replaced my machines anyhow. Doctors aren't special and people ought to stop treating them as special. Be in charge of your own healthcare. It's even worse when you consider all the non-Whites or women getting into medicine through DEI lowering the quality of doctors.
