A description of the feature.
Let's say you're 'watching' a thread (which tends to happen automatically if you created the thread and/or commented in the thread).
You will typically receive a notification/alert that someone else commented on the thread afterwards, provided you haven't turned this setting off.
However, let's say there were five replies to that thread (prior to you checking it again), including replies directly to you (but that didn't have your username tagged, like this username tag: @The Conservationist ).
Your notifications/alerts would only include the first of the replies to the thread in question. You typically would not have been alerted to second, third, fourth, or fifth replies to that thread.
This new feature allows you to get notifications for these later replies, if you change your account preferences to do so.
There are pros and cons to this.
Pro: perhaps less likely to miss replies that were meant for you, depending on how closely you go through your notifications/alerts list
Con: you will likely get a tonne more notifications/alerts, and some could be missed in the mix as you skim through them
