Grim as the immediate forecasts are, the long term outlook is more dire, as University of Calgary economist Trevor Tombe points out in a recent post on The Hub. He concludes that the debt paths for Ottawa and the provinces is unsustainable. Big tax hikes or spending cuts will be needed.
Prof. Tombe estimates Ottawa would need to double the federal GST to close its fiscal gap (or make spending cuts of equal magnitude). Returning the provinces to fiscal sustainability over the next half-century will be even more costly: an extra 15 points of sales tax, or $170-billion in spending cuts.

The people taking out loans with no plan to pay them back, who lied about their funds on hand and work under the table for cash below min wage so they don't pay income tax and suppress wages ... why aren't they helping the economy?!

It's fucking insane. Here in Saskatchewan Moe talked about a budget surplus last year. Two weeks ago they corrected it to a $1.2 billion deficit for 25/26. Alberta, BC. Ontario, everyone is anouncing deficits which were unimaginable just 10 years ago. The feds are on a path to hit the "$100 billion in the red" mark this year ...

I like how the feds say they will take money from the provinces which they expect right away but will slow walk it back to the provinces. At what point do we just tell the feds fook you and lets fight it out

I refuse to pay even a single cent more. Just did my taxes and I was raped yet again.

With the pittance I receive in CCB and subsidized daycare, I can easily say I’d be overjoyed to revoke both options if given the opportunity to pay little to no tax. Absolutely NOT worth the investment.

You generally don't need any social programs if people have intact functioning families.

Even things like public pensions piss me off because it allows people to shit all over their family and still end up looked after in the end.

Almost every social program is the government telling some loser they should suffer no consequences for shit behavior and dumb decisions.
