The referendum ballot Smith announced would fall on Oct. 19, 2026, and ask Albertans five questions on immigration levels and immigrant status that are a “significant departure from the status quo,” she said.

Those questions include whether the provincial government should take more control over immigration levels and prioritize economic migration.

A second question asks if the Alberta government should introduce laws mandating that only Canadian citizens, permanent residents and those with Alberta-approved immigration statuses should be eligible for provincially funded health, education and other social services.

A third question asks whether there should be a law requiring those with non-permanent legal immigration status to be living in Alberta for at least 12 months before qualifying for provincial social support programs.

The fourth asks if the provincial government should charge a fee or premium to immigrants with a non-permanent status living in Alberta for their and their family’s use of the health-care and education system.

The final question asks if the government should introduce legislation requiring people to provide proof of citizenship – a passport, birth certificate or citizenship card – to be eligible to vote in a provincial election.

Per the third and fourth questions, I would revise that to at least 5 years, and even 10 years. An immigrant hasn't paid enough into the system to start drawing out of it until they have paid a reasonable amount. We have paid into it for our entire working lives. Why should anyone else get to draw off of it after such a short time? And you should have to be employed for the entire time before getting any benefits. No welfare for gimmegrants.

Even if all passed wouldn't the courts just toss them? For Violating Charter or some other cow manure...

they can try but ultimately the answer is no. Provinces can decide to overstep the feds using the not withstanding clause and take control of their affairs. Judiciary is below the executive

Can't be enforced. Alberta has no armed forces, just a mishmash of RCMP (who work for the feds) and municipal police.

I hate to harp on this, but I don't see how Alberta or any province secedes from Canada simply by signing some papers. This government ignores the law all the time.

Why even ask? All of these things should have been passed on day one.

It’s the idea you need to show that this is what the people want. Also, maybe they’re too much of cowards to do it themselves. The fact that anyone is even talking about it in Canada is amazing to me.

Feds will say they are being authoritarian if pushed without the referendum as will MSM. This is the democratic response to make reality without the msm and feds saying stupid things. Also if the UCP dont win next election what will the NDP do? Will NDP hold a referendum to undo the will of the people. Trap is being set

The will of the people will be upheld

why is it controversial to remove mmmgrants or to not give mmmgrants free stuff and want judges that represent you???
