At least nine Toronto police officers have been arrested in connection with Project South, an organized crime and corruption investigation, sources tell Global News.

Sources tell the Toronto Sun one of the officers, Tim Barnhardt, has already been detained and charged with conspiracy to commit murder. After serving Wednesday night in custody, this officer is expected to make a court appearance Thursday.

Dozens of people, including at least seven Toronto police officers, have been arrested in a sweeping probe that involved allegations of drug trafficking and auto theft.
The details were confirmed by a source with direct knowledge of the case. The people accused also include individuals who are not police officers, the source said.
As of Wednesday night, the source said, at least seven Toronto police officers had been arrested. But the source added that the situation was fluid and the number of those facing charges could grow.
A federal source said there were more than 30 arrests in total, but would provide no further details. A third source with knowledge of the case said York Regional Police led the investigation.

Police say seven current and one former Toronto cop have been linked to a criminal conspiracy which allegedly sought to murder an Ontario corrections officer.

York Regional Police identified a number of suspects during Thursday’s news conference, including the Toronto police officers allegedly involved.

They include:

• Timothy Barnhardt - Toronto Police Service constable
• Robert Black - Toronto Police Service sergeant
• John Madeley (Sr.) - Toronto Police Service constable (retired)
• John Madeley (Jr.) - Toronto Police Service constable
• Carl Grellette - Toronto Police Service sergeant
• Saurabjit Bedi - Toronto Police Service constable
• Derek McCormick - Toronto Police Service constable
• Elias Mouawad - Toronto Police Service constable

Several other civilian suspects were also identified by police on Thursday. Their charges include conspiracy to commit murder, possession of a prohibited firearm, with ammunition, and disguise with intent.
