Annette Dionne, the last of the surviving famed Canadian quintuplets born during the Great Depression era, died on Christmas Eve at the age of 91.
The five Dionne sisters—Annette, Émilie, Yvonne, Cécile, and Marie—made headlines after their birth on May 28, 1934. Born as identical, premature, and undersized infants, they were the first quintuplets at the time known to survive past infancy.
The Dionne Quints Museum in North Bay, Ont., confirmed Annette Dionne’s death in an interview with The Epoch Times.
Ed Valenti, chair of the Dionne Quints Heritage Board, said Annette was the last of the quintuplets to die and also the last of the Dionne family, which had 14 children in total.
Never doubt that the goal of our post-nation state is resource extraction, not enabling citizens to live their best lives with minimal interference.Quintland
When the quintuplets were four months old, the province took the girls and placed them under control of a board of guardians. The decision saw the quintuplets moved from their family farm to a nursery-style exhibition that attracted millions of visitors who watched the quintuplets through a one-way glass. Nurses and teachers were hired to care for the girls.
The exhibition, called Quintland, was the country’s biggest tourist attraction at the time, bringing in about $500 million for the province.
Movies were made about the girls and they were sought after for product endorsements. During World War II, five identical ships were named after the sisters.
The girls’ parents, Oliva and Elzire Dionne regained custody of the girls when they were 9 years old.
