The Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA) is British Columbia's legislative framework to align provincial laws and policies with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), as called for by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. Enacted in 2019 and coming into force on November 28, 2019, DRIPA establishes UNDRIP as the province’s guiding framework for reconciliation. The act mandates the BC government to bring provincial laws into alignment with UNDRIP through consultation and cooperation with Indigenous Peoples, including the development and implementation of an action plan to achieve UNDRIP’s objectives.
The DRIPA Action Plan, released in March 2022 and covering the period 2022–2027, outlines 89 priority actions organized under four key themes: Self-Determination and Inherent Right of Self-Government, Title and Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Ending Indigenous-specific Racism and Discrimination, and Social, Cultural and Economic Well-Being.
