Their congregations have dwindled so much in the past few decades that the only people left are virtue-signalling Boomers who'll soon be dead anyway. Any institution that abandons its core mission in favour of spreading left-wing ideology inevitably withers away and dies

It's the modern day equivalent of Eve getting deceived by the devil and his promises, without realizing it leads to her own death and destruction.

Nothing new. They have a very critical view of the Bible and think that because it was written 2000 years ago, some things have to be taken a different way.

In the end every Christian denomination does that. For example in my church almost every woman wears a kapp because of 1 Corinthians 11. Besides us, the Hutterites and the Amish I don't know any denomination that follows this rule.

Some traditional Catholic women wear a "mantilla" for the same reason. But in the case of Paul it depends on whether Christians believe that his epistles contain commandments or simply helpful suggestions. When I once brought up Paul's opinion on men having long hair to an extremely hirsute trad-Christian rocker back in the 80s he just said "Paul says a lot of things. We don't have to follow them all, because he wasn't infallible like Jesus". It's a bit like the situation with the commandments in Leviticus: supposedly they were all abrogated by the New Covenant, but you still get denominations who choose to follow the bits of the Mosaic Law they happen to like. There's always going to be a certain amount of cherry-picking going on in any religion

You're right, we have to use our own judgement in following our religion, but the UC has really gone off the rails. Anyway we're all going to be called on the carpet before God in the end aren't we, all we can do it the best we can.

Small town United: OK. It's like a community centre EVERYONE goes to. Everybody knows everybody... talks about the water slide installation at the local pool and they have a rock band. Been to one. I like it.
Urban United: lol

No war of denominations here just normal vs. insane people.

If I was in a rural UC I just would want to pull the church out after hearing this.

I'm sure the attendees of the rural United Churches are much less woke and/or militant than their urban counterparts but they're still active participants in what is by this point a political project, not a religious one. I'm far from being an orthodox Christian myself but I do at least believe that if you're going to pretend to be devout you shouldn't be desperately trying to disavow the Scriptures and the traditions of your ancestors. If it's just a social club and nothing more, what's the point?

2 Thessalonians 2:3-17

King James Version

3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?
6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.
7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:
14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.
16 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,
17 Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.

You will see more and more and more of this. Things will be so bad it will be as it was in the days of Noah again.

Prepare yourselves and keep your garments clean.

They want the branding (and tax breaks) of identifying as a church of Christ, but that is all.

As others have pointed out - it's an attempt to use God as a vehicle to spread their insipid ideas.

Not taking the Lord's name in vain is one of the ten commandments, and this is an egregious example of it.
