Valued at $1.5 billion after a $445 million investment by Microsoft, the company claimed to leverage artificial intelligence to generate custom apps in 'days or weeks,' which would produce functional code that had less human involvement.

Now they've gone cloth-off... as Bloomberg reports they had a 'fake it till you make it' strategy while having inflated 2024 revenue projections by 300%. Instead of AI, the company was actually using a fleet of more than 700 Indian engineers from social media startup VerSe Innovation for years to actually write the code.

All credit to @ChevChelios who predicted this was the case.

This was bound to get exposed sooner or later. The A.I. boom is a gold rush. There's probably only a handful of actual legitimate A.I. projects, yet every company out there is claiming to offer "A.I." for everything. 90% of It's a scam. This happens everytime there's a "gold rush", scammers/organized crime are always ready to cash in on the next big thing.

Natasha AI by 700 Programmers

The Natasha neural network, marketed as an advanced artificial intelligence solution, was revealed to be a facade operated by 700 Indian programmers rather than true AI technology. BuilderAI, the company behind Natasha, claimed it could generate any application automatically using a simple interface. However, customer requests were actually sent to an office in India where human engineers manually coded the solutions.
This deception led to significant issues for the company, including numerous malfunctions and technical problems experienced by customers. Furthermore, the company faced severe financial difficulties and eventually declared bankruptcy. As of June 2025, Builder.ai is undergoing formal insolvency proceedings in the UK, with a court-appointed administrator evaluating potential asset recovery.

The revelation also had serious consequences for the involved Indian engineers, who were paid low wages and instructed to mimic AI response times and use templated responses. Many of these engineers now face visa revocations and difficulty finding employment due to the scandal.
