Pronouncing what he called America’s new ‘Declaration of Independence’, US president Donald Trump on Wednesday unveiled sweeping tariffs on the world’s economies, excluding USMCA trading partners Canada and Mexico.
Speaking to a packed crowd in the Rose Garden of the White House, Trump ran the proceedings like a Bar Mitzvah host while a Marine Band played music.
In doing so, he vowed to ”Make America Wealthy Again” (MAWA) and deliver his long-awaited wrath on various enemies and foreign governments — including, but not restricted to his Two Amigos Canada and Mexico — although both trading partners were singled out for special derision.
“For decades our country has been looted, pillaged, raped and plundered by nations near and far,” by both allies and enemies, he added. “April 2, 2025 will forever be remembered as the day American industry was reborn.”

Trump signed an executive order after the ceremony. But brandishing a wooden plaque, Trump rattled off a preliminary list of “cheaters,” China 67%; EU 34%; Vietnam 90%; India 52%. The UK got off easy with 10%.
Trump said those “common sense” tariffs were ‘reciprocal’ and included value-added taxes and what he termed ‘currency manipulation’ in those calculations. Then said he was being “kind” by cutting that rate in half.
“For Canada and Mexico, the existing fentanyl/migration IEEPA orders remain in effect, and are unaffected by this order. This means USMCA compliant goods will continue to see a 0% tariff, non-USMCA compliant goods will see a 25% tariff, and non-USMCA compliant energy and potash will see a 10% tariff. In the event the existing fentanyl/migration IEEPA orders are terminated, USMCA compliant goods would continue to receive preferential treatment, while non-USMCA compliant goods would be subject to a 12% reciprocal tariff,” said the White House Tariffs Fact Sheet.

Despite trashing both Canada and Mexico, neither were included on the list. But the ‘reciprocal’ tariffs don’t include the ‘fentanyl’ tariffs — which are the subject of a US state of emergency that needs to be extended by Congress, or the 25% tariffs placed on automobile manufacturing.
In all, Trump said his tariff assault would raise USD$6 trillion for US government coffers.

To some degree we all are confused… I think it is by design… President Trump and team being cagey as foxes. Why?
  1. If they didn’t cause this scare, could the attention have been drawn, with laser focus, on the stupidity and gross nature of the tariff systems?
  2. Would Canadian’s have put any heed to the costs put on us and the USA over these issues? We haven’t paid much heed for how long?
  3. Would we have questioned so harshly what the hell are our politicians doing and protecting? How many conversations have you had that would not have happened without it?
    1. Would we have remotely come to know how many dangerous illegal immigrants our politicians allowed to invade us and the USA?
    2. Would we have come to see, despite the economic risks being put to us, that Cdn politicians both conservative and liberal have still refused to address demands by our largest trading partner to this day?
    3. Would we acknowledge that fentanyl etc are pouring into Canada and then the USA, all facilitated by China? What is China working to achieve with this?
  4. Etc.

This whiplash isn’t over but the more we understand the why and the ongoing terror threat to our rice bowls the more motivated and focused we’ll become and then we will win. I think that has been and remains very much the initial objective of the President Trump team… that focus will facilitate beating the globalists.

Just my two cents

1. There is nothing laser focus about this approach. There is no laser focus here, but a spotlight flailing around, maybe lighting up an Antartic island with tariff for no reason. Trump’s out there calling tariffs “the most beautiful word” and yelling “I LOVE TARIFFS” while supposedly highlighting their grossness? That's not a fox being cagey, at best it's a borderline incoherent mixed signal. "It's gross and stupid, so let me sing its praises."

2. NAFTA’s been a punching bag since the ‘90s, manufacturing towns hollowed out, jobs shipped to China, people whining the whole time. USMCA got its griping too and people here would whine up more about it if they knew it. For the NPC masses, they'll heed the current thing. Trump’s not sparking a revelation, he’s just remixing an old track for NPCs who’ll forget it by next current thing.

3. Border security being a new "untalked" about story? You are so well aware politically I can't believe you wrote that. It has been talked about a ton in canada in the last decade and for over half a century in the US. It literally was the reason why the BQ was strong in Quebec against Trudeau. Now those discussion are gone because of the tariffs.

Canada’s already thrown cash at it, more money, new drones, a fentanyl czar, visa crackdowns. Foreign overstays down 90%? That’s not “refusing to address demands”; that’s action. The U.S. tossing out vague gripes as “demands” feels more like a pretext than a plan. No proof of fentanyl “pouring” from Canada, just silence in the documents. China’s (pre)-precursor problem is real, but the collective consciousness isn’t waking up to it. It's too distracted by the current thing.
Fent is a legit issue, china's subsidies and exports are documented. I'm not even against tariffs on canada for that reason IF there is clarity on the actions that need to be taken. "match our pre-precursor ban list, improve XYZ technology for detection, etc." But it's just vague hand-waving and noise, no focus.

Is deliberate confusion the new 4d chess/trust the plan?

Canadian leader Doug Ford proposes eliminating tariffs on US imports — if President Trump does the same

  • Ontario Premier Doug Ford proposed Wednesday that Canada could drop its tariffs on US imports — if President Trump did the same for America’s northern neighbor.
  • President Trump’s tariffs will put millions of American jobs at risk and raise costs for families across the U.S.,” Ford wrote on X ahead of the US president’s expected “Liberation Day” announcement.
  • “I’ll be making the case all day directly to Americans: drop the tariffs and let’s work together to be the richest and safest two countries on the planet.”

As if it matters. If you look at the list, the US is charging a tariff to countries which they have a positive trade balance with. There are even uninhabited islands on the tariff list. It's not about what is fair, it's about what makes Trump feel good.
