Carney ‘will never discuss’ supply management, Digital Services Tax -Western Standard

Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday afternoon said he is completely unwilling to put the Supply Management Agreement or Digital Services Tax discussions up for negotiation.

The supply management system issue, which tightly controls the sale of dairy, eggs and poultry in Canada, has arisen several times this week as federal leaders vie for voters’ support on the campaign trail.
“We will never discuss supply management with the US,” Carey told reporters at a press conference in Montreal Friday afternoon.

“The government is strong and clear on that.”

“From the very first day of my launch of my Liberal leadership campaign, the launch of my economic platform, [I said] we will not have discussions on supply management.”

“It’s off the table.”

A second controversial law Carney will not revisit is the Digital Services Tax, which the Parliamentary Budget Office says will cost $7.2 billion, according to the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.

“The feds need to stop dreaming up new taxes and new ways to make life more expensive,” said Franco Terrazzano, federal director of CTF, when it was first introduced in October 2023, adding it will “mean higher prices for ordinary Canadians.”
The services tax tacks on a 3% charge to foreign and domestic large businesses on certain revenue earned from engaging with online users in Canada, focusing on tech giants like Amazon, Google, Facebook, Uber and Airbnb.

The PBO advised the tax inflates prices for Canadians — the big businesses will not absorb the tax, but rather have it trickle down to consumers.

“It is also expected that businesses in the targeted sectors will adjust their services and prices in response to the new law,” said the PBO.

Carney takes no heed to such warnings and is moving full steam ahead without looking back.

“Quebec, supply management, issues involving culture and arts — they will never, ever be on the table,” said Carney on Friday.
The Liberals promise to spend $5 billion on a Trade Diversification Corridor Fund that will diversify trade partners and strengthen the security of Canadian ports “to stop the flow of drugs such as fentanyl and its precursors, as well as illegal guns and stolen autos.”

A CBSA agent recently admitted that under the Liberals’ oversight, less than 1% of imports are searched — and zero imports coming by rail are searched.

“The road ahead in this trade war will be long and difficult, but I have every confidence in our people,” said Carney.

“We are stronger when we are together. We will build a more productive, more competitive, more resilient economy. We are ready to build the fastest growing economy in the G7.”
So nothing to negotiate.

Do you guys remember all the farmer protests in Europe and how the EU had to backtrack to end them? That's what will happen in Canada if the Libs or the Tories plan to end supply management so that they can get on the good side of Trump.

Maybe but Australia and New Zealand ended supply management so it's not impossible.

@RightOfSask Until the farmers are told to dump their milk down the drain due to quotas being met (Oh wait that already happens) or kill their flocks of chickens due to fake bird flu. (Which if you let it run through the flock would create birds immune to it and strengthen the flock)

Add on top of that the USA has more production capacity capability than we do, they could just say fuck you we don't need your dairy/poultry. (As evidenced by the egg prices starting to tank already since they stopped wiping out flocks of chickens)

No..... it won't really be any kind of bargaining chip, he could easily use it as a lever to force the dictatorship to do something for him, limit it down, and then eventually toss it when it doesn't suit his needs anymore.

@Psychododo
Until the farmers are told to dump their milk down the drain due ...
Happens in the US too.
or kill their flocks of chickens due to fake bird flu.
Like in the US and thus their egg prices are three times as high as ours?
Add on top of that the USA has more production capacity capability than we do
We produce way more food than we consume. We are a net exporter of food and AG products. So why do we need the US? Same argument.

@RightOfSask

US doesn't need to produce as much and their milk (This wasn't really an issue anyways but you made it out to be) is also lower quality and loaded with shit Canada and other countries don't allow in. (Poisoned food). Applies to all milk products. We protected the milk market here but our regulations also force dumping to farmers here, there is zero reason we should be paying $7/4L for milk as they dump it down the drain. This is manufactured shortage. Fuck off.

Kill flocks of their chickens due to fake bird flu, you said egg prices in USA are 3x higher than ours. Uh..... no..... We're sitting about $5/dozen on caged eggs not free range. Free range is about $7/dozen.

The USA killed over 200 million chickens for 'bird flu' which is absolute bullshit (on the flu part) before Trump took over. It takes time to re-raise the chickens to laying quality and well, what are we? 68 days in? They're now about $3/dozen usa, even with our bullshit dollar that's about $4 for free range grass fed oragnic eggs. They're now cheaper than us to buy eggs out of fucking china cages. So, again, shut the fuck up.

We produce way more food than we consume....

No.... no we don't.... we really don't.... this is just laughable, but I'll take a crack at embarassing you a third time.

Most of our crops comes from ab/sk, most of those crops are wheat, flax(rape), and canola. We have a ton of potato crops in ontario, and nothing else really. The fruit crops in BC arn't really used anywhere else except in canada. We also have zero export market.

So no, we don't really grow anything, our biggest export is canola, which is a seed oil, which we can't actually eat..... and if the USA market dries up on that with Kennedy in charge now with MAHA, dries up even more.....

So yeah.... we have nothing really.

Edit: our biggest export is actually oil, which we ship to the USA to refine and then they ship back to us (with a surcharge) Tariffs hitting that, well, we have a bunch of crude, UNREFINED oil, which is useless here, THAT WE CANNOT REFINE OR GET TO MARKET ..... lack of piplines and refineries eh? Yeah.... sucks ass eh? So now what? We got maybe a billion dollars I think last I read was about 60% of agriculture was wheat and canola, and does a quick google search Yeah, figures, canada's agriculture GDP is about 2% of it's overall GDP.

Ooof. Harsh. Savage..... 2% of our GDP is agricultural out of 4 trillion, and about 60% of it is seed oil, fuck me, so what is your fucking plan about growing food to eat? How's that work bro?

Fun fact, Canadas GDP of about 4 trillion a year....... it doesn't even match TEXAS GDP.

We have so much potential and we squander it.

You have no clue whats going on worldwide.

Edits: Speeling errors and clarification.

Do some fucking research and keep your mouth shut when adults are talking. You're a fucking moron.

Edit: You know what, every time you open your mouth on something you're just spewing false info..... I don't even come here much but every time I do I have to debunk you..... hasn't your USAID money dried up yet? It's pretty fucking obvious you're a paid shill. My only sadness is that people gobble up the bullshit you spew. Oh well, maybe they will learn. Canada's fucked either way. I guess you take some sick perversion in driving that dagger deeper. At least you're a consistent fuck up to life. Gotta give you props to that.

You do realize that you will be up against the wall like the rest of us getting shot in the head right? You arn't any kinda spethal.

border_humperI’m amazed how many Canadians defend the dairy, chicken, and egg cartels, saying:

- that it keeps our food supply safe from foreign entities

- American milk is inferior.

- Otherwise we’d have to subsidize these industries like other nations.

It’s all nonsense. Most American dairy doesn’t use hormones and even if they did so what.

Let these industries compete like everyone other one does.

You know I am no fan of supply management but I am not drinking hormone milk, if you want your kids getting pubes when they are toddlers that's fine, buy American milk but I ain't drinking that fucking shit!

Require labeling on the milk. Subsidize the dairy farmers. If Canadian dairy is so amazing, there will be a market for it down south.

Setting aside the milk, chicken and eggs are insanely expensive, and you can’t find turkey outside of holidays. In the US, turkey parts are right there with beef, pork and chicken in the grocery store at all times.

I agree with labeling, but try to get label on GMO? Ain't going to happen, and why subsidies the farmers? That just means you pay less at the store and more in taxes, you don't save a penny, we've got to stop the whole subsidy thing, do you think the Americans will do that? If will then I'm all for it, if not then same shit different asshole.
