Shame, I like plasma TVs, excellent picture. Anyway all TVs are made as cheaply as possible by a few factories in China (or Taiwan or Korea if you really want to piss away money) and are stuffed with "Smart TV" spyware so the company can mine your data and get you to keep paying them. And of course they will die after a couple of years and you have to buy a new spy TV. If you can get your TV fixed you're lucky, TVs have been made for decades to be unfixable, you're supposed to just buy another one, consume and shut up. I miss CRTs.

My plasma is on it's last legs. It has 8 racing stripes running down the left side of the screen. The "burn in" is getting worse. I tell my niece and nephew "the stripes make it faster." Haha

I never wanted a Plasma, my wife bought it when I was away for work. She even got suckered into buying the extended warranty.(hahaha)

When I came home I was pissed that she got suckered. (Women shouldn't be allowed to buy electronics.)

SMART tv's are junk. Worst processor imaginable. Just proves if you say it's SMART, dumb people will buy it. Advertisers caught onto this a while ago. Eg:

I believe you can still buy non-smart TVs. Even if you do buy a smart TV, just don't connect it to internet and it's a non-issue.

As far as picture is concerned, 4K LCD is fine, but you have to use content designed for it, i.e. HD or higher (1080i+)

If you are playing old VCR tapes or other non-HD content then yeah it's gonna look terrible.

Is this what you are talking about?

The internet of things sucks.

What happened with the plasma?

It started popping and smoking. No fire thank goodness as i wasnt home at the time.

If you asked my youngest he would tell you it happened because of Boss Baby. I got the new TV and he told me he will never watch Boss Baby again. I guess that was the show he was watching when it died

Kids are hilarious some days

try turning off the filters they turn on by default

things like upscaling filters, and thefilters that make fake frames to turn a 24 frame/s movie into a 120 frame movie but makes everything look like shit

new tvs need lots of setting up, because they fuck up even the littlest thing by oversaturating images with too much colour so they can say

"look how VIVID it is"

I turned off stuff and the picture went all grainy but does appear to move properly.

It is trying to upscale my dvds i think when filters are enabled but does it in a way that doesnt appear to move on the screen correctly but picture is clearer.

depends on the TV

for the most pat, some upscaling is required for anything non-native. it comes down to the upscaling technique used to achive it though, as some screens will add things like filtering to try and remove jagged edges. To minigate doing things like that, youshould invest in a 3rd party upscaler, as the ones in tvs are kinda cheap and have unknown peramiters at times.

You need to spend a few hours fucking with the settings only for them to randomly reset at some point.

Pop the back of your plasma open. Probably just a few popped capacitors on the power supply. Replacements should be cheap and easy to replace.

If you want similar quality tv as the old plasmas. I would recommend looking into business/commercial televisions. Some brands might call them hospitality. If you want something really overengineered look for tv used for digital signage. Those will last you quite a while but expect to pay a pretty big price tag on it.

Why the hell are you watching TV?

I was trying to watch Ghost In The Shell the original with my older kids that i found cleaning the garage but it looked and played like poo. I tried a few other dvd and same

Mario Kart Switch looks amazing however but old dvds run weird and make me ill

A lot of the new TVs' standard setting have some sort of "smooth motion" crap turned on which gives it the soap opera effect that you're probably noticing. Not to mention the default setting tends to have the brightness cranked way the fuck up.

Depending on the TV, they usually have picture presets for "Cinema" or "Movies" which disables or reduces the post processing settings. Start with that then adjust the picture to your liking accordingly.

I removed the smooth motion as it was set to auto and the dvd looked like ass as it was all grainy and stuff. It did play without the weird motion however. Tvs are 4k now so my dvds are probably 1080p at most or 720pp. That is probably why they look terrible. With the smooth motion ai enabled it makes the image quality better but moves very strange on screen. It makes my wife and i feel ill and want to hurl.

It will take getting used to but it sure is strange as my old tv never had an issue like this and the video quality was great and moved naturally if that makes sense to anyone

Yeah, the grainy picture is likely due to the source material itself. TVs usually have some post processing features to reduce noise and other artifacts on older source material. I tend to keep all those disabled because I don't mind the graininess, but it depends on your preferences.

Fuck the smooth motion crap though. Disabling that is the first thing I do if I'm gonna watch a movie at someone else's house or even at an Airbnb.

You're not fucking lived till you had to move a TV and it took two people not because of the size but because the fucker weighed 80 lb.

I once bought something like this (because I loved the aesthetic),

745ff2dcf97b8dd7acd1aa07d4f58350.jpg

and when carrying it into the my place we dropped the fucker and wrecked it! Left it on the sidewalk for the garbage, crying shame.

If you're talking about how the movement looks shit than likely it's some type of smooth motion once you turn that off your TV will be fine.

Could forget about a tv and turn the couch around so you can stare out the window.

What was the resolution of your new tv and what was your method for viewing the older movies?

Had to go to settings->picture->expert settings and choose to turn auto off on picture clarity

Makes picture look like ass but it doesnt move weird. Tv is 4k so i suspect dvds are to low resolution for it without the clarity setting enabled

My ultimate solution is to repair (part on order) my old tv as i really cant stand the weird motion new tv does to my movies

Kids say they dont mind the way dvds look and move on tv but i find it nauseating

I am opinionated. You can have any TV. Disable WiFi and plug in a third party entertainment box. Raspberry Pi or GoogleTV with LineageOS installed. Jailbroken PS3 etc.

A lot of TVs make you sign in over the net before you're allowed to even set them up.

Sounds like you have some smooth motion or judder adjust bs maxed out. Are you talking about movements being too smooth and weird looking?

They got cheaper, so to make up for the loss in profit TVs are now "smart" to serve you as much ads as possible. End of story.

Its amazing how many options you have now. Like what do i need ambient mode for? Its just a picture stuck on the screen with some music or noise? Also there is a iptv option to watch tv? It has the Beverly Hill Billies which i thought was cool but otherwise useless. How many people are still interested in the Hill Billies that they thought that was a good idea?

I am sure the rest is 100% spyware. Plus whats with AI this and that. It just needs to display a picture

@RightOfSask hmmm i didnt try long enough but that makes sense

My old plasma was great. Plug in hdmi and watch show. Nice clean simple. Most i needed to adjust was colour a bit.

New TVs have an insane array of options that i guess to ppl that dont know better these are welcome features. My kids dont seem bothered by what i am or my wife are bothered by.

@Shockadee gonna make my new tv a kids tv. They really like it for games and I like how Mario Kart Switch works on it which is a game we play together all the time . I will disconnect it from the www as they dont need www on it. i used www to try and update the thing hopeing it would fix the screen movement issue but it didnt

d01tg0d0wnOlder movies are meant to display at 28fps... some modern tvs will annoyingly upconvert to 30fps (sometimes called soap opera effect) which makes motion appear smoother, this should be a setting you can disable in your menu because it destroys cinematic immersion in older movies.

Sux for sure .. ur forced to leave upscale setting or else the picture looks terrible. The setting makes my wife and I ill

I have a part coming for my plasma i am hoping i trouble shooted correctly and it works when i install it

d01tg0d0wnThey are pretty customizable there will be a setting somewhere which will turn off that motion stuff that makes it look weird. They all have different names for it but it will be there somewhere. First thing I disable when I get a new TV.
