BORDER BLUNDER: RCMP audit finds ‘critical’ mismanagement in air patrol (accidently on purpose? fake incompetence to hide real intentions?)
An internal audit found RCMP air patrol at the Canada-US border was so mismanaged its helicopters only flew till 4 p.m. weekdays, per Blacklock’s Reporter. The Mounties announced the lease of new helicopters only after US President Donald Trump threatened 25% tariffs over inadequate border security.
“The Air Services Program faces critical challenges that threaten its overall effectiveness and sustainability,” said a 2024 Evaluation Of The RCMP Air Services Program.
“Without significant changes and investment the RCMP is at risk of not having a reliable air service available to support critical operational activities across the country,” it said.

WATCH: RCMP insists borders are patrolled 24/7, ‘no massive influx’ of illegals
The Mounties have operated an air patrol since 1937. The Air Services Program has 30 aircraft and 67 pilots.
“Air services provide a critical support function for RCMP operations across the country,” said the report.
“Operational support ranges from providing transportation, surveillance, border patrols, search and rescue and emergency response.”
However, auditors said the program was so poorly run that aircraft assigned to duties like border patrol only flew on business days during daylight hours.
“The inability to offer 24/7 coverage impacts the number of calls Air Services is able to commit to and deliver each year,” wrote auditors.
“The Air Services Program is not mandated nor resourced to provide a 24/7 level of support.”
“Instead current resourcing models across the Air Support Program typically support the provision of service Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.”

RCMP confident in handling potential border surge
Auditors cited obsolete aircraft dating from as early as 2000 — yet auditors wrote the “current accounting policy states 10 years is the useful life.”
“The majority of RCMP aircraft are nearing or at the end of their recommended life span and do not meet capacity requirements of some operational requests,” wrote auditors.
The fleet was insufficient to serve “the needs of a policing organization.”
Mounties failed to provide their pilots with basic equipment like night vision goggles, wrote auditors. “Equipment is an operational challenge,” they wrote.
“The Air Services Program does not have adequate lights, night vision goggles, multi-sensor cameras or hoist equipment to support current operations.”
“It was noted more maintenance and investment will be required as the fleet and mission equipment become increasingly obsolete.”

RCMP withdraw from illegal Roxham Road border crossing
The RCMP on January 17 leased two new US-made Black Hawk helicopters for border patrol.
“They are being used to patrol, detect and respond to both north and southbound threats at the Canada-U.S. border,” the Mounties said in a January 22 statement.
The initiative followed President Trump’s threat to impose punishing tariffs on Canadian exports effective February 1 due to inadequate border security.
“I think it’s important for us to recognize that we need the ability, if there is an emergency management or critical incident or a crisis anywhere across our country, that we’re able to mobilize,” Deputy RCMP Commissioner Bryan Larkin told reporters January 15.
“The RCMP is heavily focused on, how do we do that?”
