Mountainview trustee faces calls for removal after ‘profoundly racist’ presentation
A Manitoba school trustee is facing calls for him to be removed from the board after making “profoundly racist” comments during a board meeting.
On Monday, during a Mountain View School Division (MVSD) school board meeting in the city of Dauphin, Trustee Paul Coffey made a presentation to the board he called “Racism/Anti Racism – Nice Until It Isn’t.”
The presentation, which is available to view online, includes Coffey defending the use of the word “Indian” when referring to Indigenous people, and using the term multiple times while speaking.
“Over the past 70 years it has transitioned to native, Aboriginal, First Nations, Indigenous,” Coffey said. “I find that reductive, and it dismisses the rich cultural diversity and unique identities within Indian communities.
“Name changing is a form of erasure, for example the Ukrainians, Irish, Russians, Germans and other nationalities have maintained their identities for the last centuries and for many more to come, therefore I will continue to use the word Indian in this presentation.”
Coffey also praised both the intentions and the outcomes of Canada’s former residential school system.“They were good,” Coffey said. “They were central for reading, writing and arithmetic, enforcement of school attendance, and provided essential education and skills to navigate a changing world shaped by colonizers, and this was realized by all.
“This education was needed to move forward for people to navigate the new system, the new world.”
He also criticized the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Final Report, and questioned why it contained no “good news stories” about residential schools.
whew lad! “Coffey also criticized Indigenous land acknowledgements which have become more and more commonplace at events and within organizations in Manitoba and across the country. “Excessively repeating without meaningful action or dialogue is performative and tokenistic,” Coffey said. “This exacerbates feelings of resentment, division within communities, and leads to a sense of stagnation and hopelessness.”Coffey also criticized Indigenous land acknowledgements which have become more and more commonplace at events and within organizations in Manitoba and across the country. “Excessively repeating without meaningful action or dialogue is performative and tokenistic,” Coffey said. “This exacerbates feelings of resentment, division within communities, and leads to a sense of stagnation and hopelessness.”
On Thursday, Education Minister Nello Altomare told media on a conference call the province will investigate the presentation and the trustee. “We share the opinions of Manitobans that are horrified with what was said at that meeting,” Altomare said.
“I was disappointed, we’ve done a lot of work in our province and I believe our province leads the work in reconciliation, especially with the work we are doing with school divisions and the department of education.” The minister said the province will meet MVSD officials Friday afternoon and will decide next steps after their investigation.
