Smith threatens 'national unity crisis' over Ottawa's threat to cut off Alberta oil exports to U.S.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said there would be a 'national unity crisis' if Ottawa attempted to stop the flow of Alberta oil and gas to the U.S. in a potential trade dispute with President-elect Donald Trump.

Trump has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods unless Canada resolves its border security problems. On Sunday, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said Canada is not ruling out the restriction of energy exports to the U.S. as a potential countermeasure.

"All options are on the table when it comes to defending Canadian interests, and that includes our energy exports to the United States," said Joly.

"We've seen the rhetoric from the Trump campaign, and we must be prepared for all scenarios. If the U.S. imposes tariffs, we won't hesitate to look at our options, including energy exports."

Smith fired back during a press conference on Monday, saying there would be a "national unity crisis" if Ottawa attempted to restrict Alberta energy to the U.S.

"We just won't stand for that," she said. "And I don't think Ontario and Quebec should stand for that. They shouldn't be standing by and listening while a federal minister talks about cutting off their energy supply."

In 2023, the value of Alberta's crude oil exports to the U.S. was approximately C$113.4 billion. In 2024, the value was C$127 billion.

If the East is willing to screw Alberta over I guarantee Alberta will separate as the writing is on the wall and that is the aim to harm Albertans every last one of us

@brutana_dilewski Didnt you see us in Ottawa not long ago? Things are a changing. If a referendum was held on this issue should this scenario arise I could see us walking away and becoming sovereign.

you still might be correct in the end as this province has cucked itself with the mmmgrants and leftist crap but i still think we would have the votes

Maybe Justin should have built those pipelines?

I’m no expert on geopolitics or Canada’s oil and gas industry, but…

if we don’t sell our oil and gas to the USA, who are our other customers?

Why can't we just secure the border and avoid the tarrifs altogether? It's like they won't even consider it.

I have now heard PP, corrupt carney, cretien, harper all in recent days talk from the same script... the USA shouldn't sanction us but not a word about fixing the out of control border along with mass deportation and fixing the epic drug problem... Alberta needs to separate, join the USA and then we get the best of all worlds as we finally break free of the evil cabal uniparty, we attract industry rather than selling raw product, we mass deport mmmmmmmigrants along with solving the epic drug problem!

Better to harrumph about how ‘Trump has abandoned the respect and goodwill that has defined the Canada/U.S. relationship’ than to soberly realize that Canada is going to be expected to pay full freight. The free ride, on defence and border security at least, is over.

@DisobeyTyranny yes but let's be honest PP is not a political leader of any province or of Canada at this point. Why would Trump even give a shit about talking to him.

Things change very quick and people have very God damn short memories. Get yourself a new liberal leader who has a bit of charisma and really good at lying and you may just have another liberal minority.

Meme is accurate .. this is the Trump goal

China will make us suffer and China controls the politicos this is why the politicos say the same thing

Unity will be when China is removed

Alberta is rumored to be hosting 80 000 plus Chinese mil and we are training them as well or someone is i.e Britain

If not removed you will see things escalate bigly
