Everything going through the internet is as insecure as a ham radio to the eye of sauron at this point. They might advertise themselves as encrypted but most platforms have built in vulnerabilities in the hardware and operating system, put there by the ringwraiths in the first place.
Alternative modes of communication by contrast would allow local, and possibly even national communities to talk on communication bands that are not being targeted. This is ideal for bypassing all the digital thought policing and electronic spying going on. Now the gamers can talk about age of empires or whatever with relative safety.
